Direct answer: An AI workout app feels random when it changes exercises without preserving a clear goal, progression path, fatigue budget, or reason the user can understand. Useful variation changes the stimulus deliberately. Randomness merely changes the list.

The complaint behind the question

Across reviews of Fitbod, Freeletics, Gravl, and newer AI planners, users repeatedly describe sessions that reshuffle movements, overuse isolation work, or ignore what happened last week. The deeper complaint is not that a plan changes. It is that the change cannot be traced to equipment, recovery, progression, or preference.

Why this happens

A coherent program connects today’s exercise, rep range, load, and order to a longer training block. If an app optimizes each session in isolation, novelty can masquerade as intelligence. The result may look personalized while making progressive overload and skill practice harder to see.

A five-point quality check

  1. The app states the session goal before listing exercises.
  2. Movement patterns remain balanced across the week.
  3. Changes have an observable reason such as recovery or equipment.
  4. Progression can be traced for several weeks.
  5. You can keep, swap, or exclude an exercise without rebuilding everything.

A safer decision rule

Keep the plan if you can explain what is progressing and why each major exercise is present. Question it when novelty is the only visible pattern. A good app should reduce programming uncertainty, not require a manual audit after every generation.

What good product behavior looks like

The plan should show which movement patterns and performance targets carry from one week to the next. If an exercise changes, the user should be able to see whether equipment, fatigue, a preference, or the planned training phase caused it. A useful swap keeps the intended movement purpose visible and preserves the old result for comparison; it does not silently rename a different exercise as progress. A simple week view can reveal a coherent program more clearly than another generated-session button.

Where Boddy fits

Boddy addresses the randomness problem by keeping the plan connected to the rest of the training record: completed sessions, supported camera-guided movements, meals, recovery, and progress all live in one workflow. That context makes each workout easier to understand and adjust instead of presenting it as an isolated AI answer. The user still has final control over every recommendation.

Important limit. A coherent-looking calendar is not proof that its exercises, loads, or recovery assumptions fit you. Review the actual sessions and adjust the plan when equipment, experience, or symptoms differ from the inputs the app received.

A quick test before you depend on the feature

Worked example. Your plan replaces a squat with leg extensions on Monday, then brings the squat back on Friday at a different rep target. Before accepting the change, compare the two sessions: was the swap caused by unavailable equipment, a recovery adjustment, or a deliberate change in training emphasis? If the app gives no reason, keep the movement that fits your goal and record the substitution. Look at the following two weeks for a recognizable progression in movement pattern, reps, or load rather than judging one surprising workout in isolation.

Bottom line

Judge the sequence, not one surprising workout. Keep variation that has a visible purpose; question changes that erase the progression you meant to follow.
